Combustion chamber shape, rough edges on valves/pistons, temperature of plugs, intake temp, etc..... You can push 6 to 8 lbs of boost on *12 to 1* compression ratio if you get all your variables right.. Generous intercooling, very cold plugs, and a baby-butt smooth combustion chamber all the way around.. Peak HP doesn't take into consideration the torque or flatness of the curves to get there... producing 500hp on a 10:1 boosted motor vs. 500hp on a 8:1 boosted motor, the 10:1 motor is going to have earlier torque, and a broader powerband..
